Photos: Rare Westerly wind makes wild surf for kiteboarders in West Van

A local photographer was at Ambleside Beach last Wednesday to catch the action

Surf’s up, West Vancouver.

The stoke was high last Wednesday (Sept. 7), as ideal conditions made for a wicked day of surf sports off Ambleside Beach.

As kiteboarders were getting aerial, one local photographer decided to head down and shoot the action.

“I went for an hour and ended up spending five,” said Neil Shearar, who lives in Lower Lonsdale.

Shearar – who works as a mariner and used to be part of a windsurfing school at Ambleside – said he knew it was going to be a big day.

On just a handful of days each year, a Westerly wind hits the beach just right. “It makes for a nice chop out there so people can get those big air jumps,” Shearar explained.
