Vancouver's Stanley Park seawall will be closed overnight in anticipation of stormy weather and king tides.

The Vancouver Board of Parks and Recreation announced that the Stanley Park seawall will be closed from 5 p.m. onward today (Jan. 20) between Lions Gate Bridge and Third Beach in anticipation of stormy weather.

The city is expected to be hit with wind, rain, and king tides that could make the seawall unsafe. The Park Board warns that the seawall will only reopen following assessments of tide level on Saturday (Jan. 21) morning.

Given the changing conditions, other parts of the seawall may also be closed without warning and the Park Board says crews are making the necessary preparations such as laying sandbags.

The Park Board asks the public to "please respect all closures, give staff space to work and stay away from the water's edge during surges, particularly if accompanying children or animals."

The last king tide caused floods around Vancouver and even created a small island with floating logs in False Creek. There were also concerns that locals were not obeying posted signage.
