Suspect points firearm at man in taxi in New West

New Westminster police seek witnesses and dash-cam footage related to what's believed to be an isolated and targeted incident

New Westminster police are searching for a suspect who allegedly pointed a firearm at a man and pursued him in a vehicle.

According to the New Westminster Police Department, police responded to a report of an attempted shooting in the vicinity of Royal Avenue and Fourth Street about 8:30 p.m. on Monday, April 11.

“The intended victim was sitting in a taxi at a red traffic light when he was approached by an unknown male who pointed a firearm at him,” said a NWPD press release. “The victim exited the vehicle and ran down Fourth Street, at which time the suspect pursued him in a white vehicle. At this time, the suspect remains outstanding.”

The NWPD’s major crime unit is investigating the incident and is searching for CCTV video surveillance. Police are also looking for dash-camera footage from anyone who was driving in the area of Royal Avenue and Fourth Street between 8 and 9 p.m. on Monday.

“New Westminster police major crime detectives are in the early stages of this investigation, and believe it to be an isolated and targeted incident,” said NWPD spokesperson Sgt. Sanjay Kumar in a news release. “We’re working to determine if this was related to gang activity or any other shootings that have recently occurred around the Lower Mainland.”
