An alert store owner likely helped stop a woman from being the victim of a bitcoin scam last week in North Delta.

Last Thursday afternoon, Jan. 21, Delta police say a workers from a nearby store in the 11900 block of 88th Ave., called police to report a female inside his store who was extremely distraught after almost falling victim to a bitcoin fraud.

“The worker explained to police that he noticed the female on the phone while trying to use the bitcoin machine. The worker stated that he could tell something was wrong, and asked the female to hang up the phone while police were called,” said DPD. “It was determined that the worker had just interrupted a scam in which the female was being instructed to surrender her SIN number and ‘empty her bank account’ into the bit coin machine.

“Police advised the female to reach out to Canada Services to request a new SIN number, and advise her bank of the situation so her accounts can be more closely monitored. Police also advised the female not to answer any phone numbers she does not recognize.”
