Repeat offender breaks into an Oak Bay home and gets nabbed by Saanich police

Suspect described as “an active criminal for decades."

A man who broke into a home near the corner of Newton Street and Eastdowne Road in Oak Bay on Tuesday was arrested by Saanich police after the victim and witnesses provided police with his description and direction of travel.

The 49-year-old man, described as “an active criminal for decades,” fled on foot but was seen by Saanich police boarding a bus carrying a pillow case with the stolen property. The bus was stopped and he was placed under arrest.

Upon his arrest it was determined that he already had 12 convictions for breaking and entering. He had been released with numerous conditions, including to not be in possession of a knife. As he was searched, a knife was found.

Oak Bay police have asked that he be held in custody for a court appearance.

The crime happened on the same day a letter from the Urban Mayors’ Caucus came up for discussion at the legislature. The letter detailed a litany of stories of chronic offenders getting caught, only to be returned to the streets in a “catch and release” justice system.

The caucus, co-chaired by Victoria Mayor Lisa Helps, paints a picture of a problem that is getting worse.

Among their recommendations are stricter bail conditions, a review of charge assessment guidelines, increased investment in the prosecution service and more community courts.

“I strongly support investing in early intervention and wrap-around support services but it all needs to be done in a manner that doesn’t leave society at risk,” said Oak Bay Chief Constable Ray Bernoties. “Otherwise, one individual can cause incredible harm and trauma to countless others.”
