Richmond RCMP is reminding both pedestrians and drivers to be careful while on the road as the rainy and shorter days return.
Last year, a total of 38 collisions involved pedestrians where 24 of those collisions occurred during the winter months, according to the Richmond RCMP.
There were three pedestrian deaths due to collisions in 2020.
“With darker conditions and poor visibility, we see more collisions involving pedestrians,” said Cpl. Adriana O’Malley, spokesperson for the Richmond RCMP.
“The effect of these collisions can be huge on all those involved. It’s so important we as the police, as well as the public, do everything possible to prevent someone from being injured or killed.”
Mounties said that there have been 28 collisions involving pedestrians this year, and luckily, no fatalities.
Pedestrians are reminded to make themselves visible as the days get shorter and darker earlier.
While on the road pedestrians should:
- Wear reflective gear when possible, especially in wet weather a
- Make eye contact with drivers.
- Be careful at intersections and watch for drivers turning left or right through crosswalks.
- Always cross at designed crosswalks.
Meanwhile, drivers should always keep their focus on the road and not be distracted by mobile devices while operating a vehicle.
Drivers should also be aware of pedestrians and yield to them especially when turning at intersections and near transit stops.
