One man has died after drowning at West Lake on the Canada Day long weekend.

Prince George RCMP say on Monday (July 1), they received a report of a man that went underwater but was pulled from the lake by the public, unresponsive.

Officers go to the lake and took over CPR being performed by a bystander.

An automated external defibrillator was also used until paramedics could arrive on the scene.

Further efforts to revive the man were unsuccessful and he was pronounced dead.

The B.C. Coroners' Service was called in and will take over the investigation; no foul play is suspected.

"The Prince George RCMP would like to thank those members of the public that pulled the man from the water, began CPR and assisted with this tragic incident before and after emergency responders arrived," Cpl. Craig Douglass says in a news release.

Police add anyone affected by the incident is urged to speak to someone for their mental health and well-being.

The Prince George RCMP's Victim Services Section is available for support and can be reached free of charge at 250-561-3329.

The Crisis Prevention, Intervention & Information Centre is available 24 hours a day, also free of charge, at 1-888-562-1214.
