On Our Radar: Tri-City cops carrying symbolic torch for Special Olympians

The local edition of the Law Enforcement Torch Run is also a $2,000 fundraiser in hopes of empowering Special Olympics athletes.

A fiery torch will be making its way through Coquitlam's City Centre tomorrow (June 2) — and in Port Moody next week — symbolizing encouragement and empowerment for aspiring athletes.

Mounties, runners and other local supporters are taking part in the Tri-Cities' leg of the Law Enforcement Torch Run (LETR) to bring awareness to Special Olympics BC.

It's the governing body for Olympians across the province on the disability spectrum, and the annual event also acts as a fundraiser for its year-round sport, youth and health youth programs.

Both the Coquitlam and Port Moody torch runs have set $2,000 goals for Special Olympics athletes this year.

And the public is invited to join one or both events — the first is a three-kilometre mid-day run around Spirit Square (3000 Burlington Dr.), near Coquitlam city hall and the RCMP detachment.

"Participants will run to raise vital funds and awareness for Special Olympics BC athletes and programs," adds spokesperson Cpl. Paige Kuz in a release today (June 1), noting Special Olympics provides "life-changing opportunities."

The Coquitlam LETR is scheduled for 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Thursday.

A BBQ and 50/50 draw will also take place at Spirit Square, organized by Coquitlam RCMP.

If you wish to make a contribution, you can visit Special Olympic BC's website.

Port Moody police (PMPD) are scheduled to carry the torch for 1.25 km from the department to the boat launch at Rocky Point Park next Wednesday (June 8) starting at 11:30 a.m.

A BBQ will also follow the run at noon in Rocky Point Park, co-organized by the PMPD and Metro Vancouver Transit Police.
