New Coquitlam program offers fun activities for people with dementia

This afternoon program offers fun and engaging activities for people 50 years and older who have dementia. As well, it provides a break for their caregivers.
Brain Awareness Week
A new Coquitlam program provides brain -building activities for people with dementia.

A new program for enhancing the lives of older adults with dementia and their care partners in Coquitlam has just launched in time for World Alzheimer's Day on Sept. 21.

The program is a partnership between the City of Coquitlam and the Adult Cognitive Wellness Centre and is for adults 50 years and older who are experiencing symptoms of dementia.

Offered Saturday afternoons at Dogwood Pavilion from 1 to 3:30 p.m., the Dementia Friendly Day Program provides individuals an opportunity to socialize with peers who are also experiencing similar changes.

At the new program, the participants will be engaging in physical exercises and fun cognitive stimulating activities, lead by a recreational professional with dementia education.

While the participants are enjoying all the fun engaging activities, the family caregiver is encouraged to take some much-deserved “me time.”

“We are thrilled to be expanding to open the fifth adult cognitive wellness program in September Alzheimer’s month,” stated clinical director Massi Bakhshian in a news release.

“We are very excited about this new collaboration with the City of Coquitlam. They always impressed us with all that they do and continue to do, for the older adults in their community. This unique weekly program will make the Coquitlam community centres dementia-friendly.”
