An East Ladner golf course has moved a step closer to building a major new addition.

Council this week gave the preliminary go-ahead for Sunshine Woods on 64th Street to tear down its existing clubhouse and construct a new 8,880-square-foot building.

The course is located in Agricultural Land Reserve, so must receive a non-farm use approval from the Agricultural Land Commission, as well as other approvals.

The owner originally submitted an application in late 2017, but a revised application was submitted in June of last year.

The application for the non-farm use will be forwarded to the ALC, with the city noting it supports the project.

A staff report notes the golf course began operating before the creation of the ALC in the early 1970s. Given the golf course and clubhouse use pre-date the ALC and the Agricultural Land Commission Act, the pre-existing use and its associated structures may remain as a permitted non-farm use.

However, the proposed clubhouse expands beyond the existing clubhouse footprint.

The city will also review the existing private sanitary servicing system to see if it's sufficient.

The golf course is located across the road from a farm property on 64th Avenue where the owner submitted an application to amend the Official Community Plan to build a cold storage warehouse and food processing facility.
