Watch: Life as a marine biologist in the Canadian Arctic

"You'll end up in really cool places in your life and in the world, like in the Arctic." Researcher Eugenie Jacobsen explains where a career in marine biology can take you.

Eugenie Jacobsen says her love of the sea originated in childhood, growing up on British Columbia's Sunshine Coast.

She studied biological oceanology at the University of British Columbia before starting a master's in fisheries science and marine ecology in Newfoundland.

Her current research investigates contaminants, such as mercury and pesticides, found in deep-sea fish in the northern Labrador Sea. She hopes her research "will help to better understand how ecosystem shifts of deep-sea fish towards northern latitudes may alter trophic food webs in the Arctic."

Jacobsen wishes to inspire others to achieve their career goals.

"Keep pursuing the things that are of interest to you and to you alone... you'll end up in really cool places in your life and in the world, like in the Arctic," she told Glacier Media.

You can follow Jacobsen's adventures to the Arctic on Instagram and TikTok.
