Veteran provincial politician Linda Reid kicked off her local election campaign in Richmond South Centre with the opening of her office on Sunday.

The Speaker of the Legislative Assembly of British Columbia could, if elected, mark a 30th year in office, as MLA, come the end of the next term.

Reid is already the longest standing MLA, having first been elected in 1991, when the BC Liberals broke out, after the demise of the Social Credit Party.

Reid is the recipient of three commemorative medals – the 125th Anniversary of the Confederation of Canada Medal, the Queen Elizabeth II Golden Jubilee Medal, and the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal.

Reid is competing against Coun. Chak Au, who is running for the BC NDP. Greg Powell is the BC Green Party candidate.

In 2013, she won the Richmond East riding with 55 per cent of the popular vote. That riding has been realigned and split in two for the May 9 election.
