Richmond goes to the polls, along with the rest of the province, on May 9 to vote in our four, new MLAs in the Steveston, Queensborough, North-Centre and South-Centre ridings.

How/When/Where to vote

- May 9 is General Voting Day, from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.

- To be eligible, you must be a Canadian citizen, age 18 or older on General Voting Day (May 9) and a B.C. resident for the past six months.

- If you do not receive a voting package by mail, you may register at the poll

- Ideally, you should show a piece of ID (driver’s licence, BC ID card, BC Services card, Indian status). Or, you can show two documents with your name, including at least one with your current home address. Voters without ID can be vouched for.

- You may vote at any district electoral office, from now until 4 p.m. on voting day, May. 9

- A week before the election, voters can ask for a vote-by-mail package using the online form or by calling 1-800-661-8683.

Advance voting

(Full details online at Elections.bc.ca) is available on April 29 and 30, and May 3, 4, 5 and 6. Advance voting places are open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. (local time). All voters can vote at any advance voting place, and all advance voting places are wheelchair accessible.

All-candidates meetings

- Tuesday, April 25 - Social services - A host of non-profit, social service organizations are hosting an all-candidates meeting at Minoru Place Activity Centre, from 7-9 p.m. Richmond Centre for Disability, Richmond Poverty Reponse Committee and Jewish Seniors Alliance welcome questions regarding affordable housing, poverty reduction strategies, food security, transportation, health care, child care and many other issues related to social welfare.

- Wednesday, April 26 - Economy/General - The Richmond Chamber of Commerce and Richmond News are partnering to host a candidates meeting at Gateway Theatre, from 5:30-8 p.m. Registration is required at RichmondChamber.ca. Attendees at the debate will be able to pose questions to the candidates through the PigeonHoleLive mobile app. Those without access to a smartphone will be provided assistance in entering their questions. This event will also be broadcast on FacebookLive at 6 p.m. Simply “like” the Chamber’s Facebook page to ensure you don’t miss a minute. 

- Thursday, April 27 - Education - Richmond education stakeholders, including the Richmond Board of Education and Richmond Teachers’ Association, will be hosting an all-candidates meeting at Richmond secondary school, from 7-9 p.m. The public is encouraged to meet the candidates, hear their views and ask any education-related questions.
