The City of Delta is asking Metro Vancouver to close all its parks within the City of Delta.

On Wednesday afternoon, Mayor George Harvie wrote a letter to Sav Dhaliwal, chair of the Metro Vancouver board of directors.

The letter was copied to the Optimist.

“We are requesting that Metro Vancouver close its destination regional parks in the City of Delta in advance of the upcoming long weekend – Boundary Bay Regional Park and Deas Island Regional Park,” wrote Harvie in the letter. “With the closure of the provincial parks, people from across the region are likely to gather in these destination parks, creating unsafe situations.”

Harvie said, while they are working hard to encourage Delta residents to stay home as much as possible, we also want people to use their neighbourhoods for exercise while maintaining physical distancing.

“We encourage you to support this message of staying active close to home, including through the closure of destination regional parks,” added Harvie.
