New Richmond city councillor Kelly Greene is organizing a pre-women’s march meetup Saturday for march-goers from Richmond to ride the Canada Line to the event together.

The third annual Vancouver Women’s March kicks off downtown at 10 a.m. The first series of worldwide marches were organized in 2017 after Donald Trump’s inauguration as U.S. president because of the anti-women comments he had made.

Greene remembers going to the first march in Vancouver on her own, and although she made friends along the way she knows it would have been more comfortable making the journey with a group.

“Heading down by yourself requires more bravery than when you go as a team,” she said

Even if the “walking bus” encourages just a handful of people to attend who wouldn’t have otherwise, Green will feel accomplished.

The group will gather at the plaza in front of Richmond City Hall and walk to Brighouse Station together at 9:15 a.m.

Greene, who identifies as a feminist, thinks it’s important to march to keep issues of equality front of mind.

“I’m marching for my kids,” she said. “I’m marching so that they don’t have to.”
