May is declared Child Care Month in B.C. and this year, the City of Richmond is hosting three virtual workshops to help support those taking care of the children in Richmond.

In addition to the workshops, the city is collecting inspirational stories, photographs, artwork, videos or creative projects which showcase child care programs in Richmond as part of its #RichmondHasHeart campaign.

Here are the workshops for the upcoming weeks:

May 13 from 7 – 8:45 p.m.

Loving the Outdoors Through Literature

Trisha Edgar, education programmer at Lynn Canyon Park’s Ecology Centre, will be leading this workshop on how stories about animals, plants and wild places can act as a portal to outdoor learning. Use literature to bring your group of children outdoors to explore through books, songs, oral stories and activities. There will be discussions on how to transition ideas onto digital learning formats.

May 20 from 7 to 8:45 p.m.

Connections to Nature

Julie Hansen, an early childhood educator, will be exploring hands-on learning opportunities inspired by nature which can be created within your own program space. She will discuss the positive experiences that nature has on the overall development in children.

May 27 from 7 to 8:45 p.m.

Why Gardens and Kids Grow so Well Together

Megan Zeni, a teacher in the Richmond School District, will be exploring the science behind why kids and dirt “grow so well together.” Participants will discuss practical and easy ways to get kids playing and learning in garden spaces while learning why gardening is important for the body and mind. Ideas on planting and meaningful play opportunities in a house or school garden will also be discussed. No gardening experience is required.

Registration is limited per session.
