Young photographers in Richmond have a chance to have their work displayed, develop their skills and gain experience through a contest for public school students.

The Richmond School District is hosting the competition along with the Vancouver International Photography Festival and Aberdeen Centre. VIPF hosts an annual contest for professionals every year, and displays the winning photos into Aberdeen Centre during the winter.

The contest for students, open until Feb. 1, invites young photographers to submit their work for a chance to be displayed in the exhibit.

“We encourage you to send in your work, because you may be the one,” said Joey Kwan, director of public relations at Aberdeen Centre.

Five winners will be chosen, and they’ll each receive a $100 gift card to Aberdeen Centre and tickets to the 2019 VIPF in September which includes photography seminars.

The student who wins first place will also be named Aberdeen Centre’s student intern photographer. Kwan explained the mall will reach out to them to shoot events throughout the year, and offer a small honorarium.

Contest rules emphasize that entries will be judged based on skill, and that chance plays no part in who will win. Entries should be technical, but more importantly, tell a story. Students can submit a two-sentence caption with each of their photos.

Winners will be announced Feb. 28.
