On the “KidSport Day” on Sept. 28, the Triple O’s on No.5 Road will donate one dollar from every combo sold to KidSport BC, an organization that helps financially underprivileged kids participate in team sports.

The donations will go towards sport registration fees for kids aged 18 and under, and all donation raised in Richmond will stay in the local community, according to Coun. Alexa Loo, ambassador for the organization.

“It is a really great program,” said Loo.

“Their parents apply through their sport. They fill out an application form, it gets their kids in sport and we reimburse the sport. So the kids don’t even know that they are the one that’s being supported and none of the kids know that.”

As an Olympic snowboarder, Loo said she knows how important it is for children to participate in sport, but it can be expansive to some families.

“It’s the registrations fee. For example, soccer is cheaper sport, but the registration is still a couple hundred dollars for winter season, and then another more than $100 for summer season. It’s a big chunk of money for some family to put forward,” said Loo.

“We don’t want kids not be able to participate in sports for their financial situation. They get regular exercise, feeling like they belong, and they are not excluded. It’s better for their mental and physical health.”

The KidSport Day raised more than $3,000 last year and aims to raise more than 3,300 this year.
