Summer Reading Club is in full swing at all four Richmond Public Library (RPL) locations. It’s free to join, and the club is open to kids of all ages. More than 3,200 kids have signed up so far, but it’s not too late to join – registration is still open. This year’s theme is “Motion Commotion!” Kids receive a special reading record to keep track of their reading. Participants also receive weekly stickers, a chance to win book prizes, and a medal for completing the club. For more information, visit the library’s website at www.yourlibrary.ca, or call us at 604-231-6412.

As part of Summer Reading Club each year, we encourage children to let us know what they think of the books they are reading by writing book reviews, and each week several reviews are chosen to be published in the Richmond News. Here are this week’s reviews:

This book is about a boy named Frankie who is having trouble with his math quiz. He has to study for his math quiz, which leads him to many places in his imagination. I like this book because it is full of cool adventures. It is also very cool how when Frankie is in actual life it is like a normal chapter book. When it’s the adventure parts the book becomes a comic.

I give this book 5 stars.

This book is about the Baudelaire children who were informed that their parents have perished in a fire. Soon they are off to live with a man named Count Olaf. Count Olaf is a terrible man who is after the fortune that the orphans’ parents left them. I love this book because it gives you a big urge to keep reading till you read all night. This book has a mysterious suspense that makes it an excellent choice for parents and children to enjoy!

I give this book 5 stars.

Abby and Jonah have a magic mirror in their basement. One night Abby and Jonah sneak down to the basement and knock on the mirror three times. A purple swirl appears and sucks them inside, and takes them to a fairy tale. I like this book because the magic mirror is magical, and takes people to fairy tales, and I like fairy tales because they make me think about being in a magical land and meeting new superheroes, princesses, talking glasses, monsters and penguins.

I give this book 5 stars.

This book is about dinosaur names and species and their appearance. It even shows their size! It’s placed in alphabetical order to make it easier to look things up. The book also explains their life cycle, food, habitat, their defences and when they existed. I like this book because it’s really descriptive and they drew a background with images of dinosaurs to make it fun for kids. Because kids like to read it, it also encourages kids to read other books. The book explained almost everything about dinosaurs in clear simple paragraph that attracted my attention the moment I saw it. If you are doing a project about dinosaur species, I suggest you read this book!

I give this book 5 stars.
