This is an advance warning for the people of Steveston.

If you’re allergic to cheesy ‘90s dance music, do not, we repeat, do not go outside of your house around 7 p.m. tonight.

And if you hear faint waves of MC Hammer, Snap (The Power) or even a little 2 Unlimited (Get Ready for This), do not call 9-1-1.

Don’t be alarmed, for it’s only local DJ Mike Smith atop his fourth floor patio on Third Avenue and Bayview Street spinning a few tracks in honour of front line workers during the pandemic.

Like so many others are doing at 7 p.m., Smith felt it was time to “get into the groove” and “prove his love” for all concerned.

“I see everybody out there doing something at 7 p.m. to recognize the workers and then I heard the (Gulf of Georgia) Cannery sounding its whistle, so I thought I should get involved,” said Smith, while chasing his two-year-old around the house.

“So I thought, let’s do some cheesy 90s dance music for 15 to 20 minutes and maybe raise everyone’s spirits a little.”

Smith, who normally works as a heavy equipment operator with the City of Richmond, has been DJing on and off for years at the Buck and Ear pub across from his home, as well as at private parties and corporate events.

He said he’s hoping for a small audience out on the street – social distancing, of course.

“But you should be able to hear it at Imperial Landing,” he added.

“I’m going to check out who in our group hears it. I have buddies all over town and if some don’t hear it, I may have to turn up the volume a bit. I want to be able to reach everyone.”

Smith said he plans to be up there on his rooftop every day, as long as it’s not raining and for as long as his neighbours are OK with it.
