Halloween is a little more than a week away and businesses in Steveston are celebrating the spooky holiday with their annual scarecrow contest.

Richmondites are encouraged to vote for their favourite scarecrows in Steveston’s Scarecrow Crawl online before Saturday, Oct. 31.

Each year, the Steveston Merchants Association (SMA) hosts the Steveston Scarecrow Crawl for all merchants to build their own version of a scarecrow to win cashes prizes.

Despite COVID-19, 25 businesses have created their versions of scarecrows and are ready to be voted as the best this year.

Communities can vote for their favourite scarecrow by giving a “like” to their preferred scarecrow photo on the event’s Facebook and Instagram pages.

Carolynne Palla, administrator with the SMA, said many merchants didn’t have enough time to prepare a scarecrow this year because of their “late decision” in mid-September to proceed with the event due to Covid.

“SMA is thankful to the merchants who worked hard to create their scarecrows during a very busy time and hopes the contest will bring extra attention to their business and the village,” said Palla.

“We hope the event will still bring joy to the holiday even during such a difficult time.”

Winners of the contest will receive cash prizes of $1,000, $500 and $250 for first, second and third place respectively.
