Tributes have been pouring in from Richmond News readers via social media, after word of Mr. Teddy Bear's passing began to spread.

Bear passed away before Christmas and was known among almost everyone living in Steveston. He liked to sunbathe by the wharf and chat with people in the community.

Last month, Bear’s 200 stuffed teddies were donated to a Victoria-based charity to be shipped to families in need abroad.

Huong Nguyen, a Steveston business owner, recalled that she would see a "beautiful soul often shining his light in his daily walks with his fur babies. Seeing him always brought a smile to my face."

Adam Edelsh, a local resident, agreed with Nguyen, calling Bear "a ray of sunshine that made people feel good by just being himself."

Deborah Langlands shared how grateful she is for Bear, who would tell her son stories and always "brought his spirits right back up" when her son was down.

Mark Glavina posted a painting of Bear 10 years ago, and remembered him as a man who was generous with his time, recalling the day Bear volunteered as a model in their studio for a quick oil painting demo.

Kim Tompkins, however, said although her mother never knew Bear, she had the same love for teddy bears - collecting more than 1600 before she passed away.

"They would've been good friends," said Tompkins.

"Sad to hear...wonder if he knew what an icon (of Steveston) he had become."
