A Richmond-based charity is urging people to come out and support The Coldest Night of the Year (CNOY).

CHIMO is encouraging Richmond residents to bundle up and raise cold, hard cash for the walking event on Saturday, Feb. 22, which is a family-friendly winter fundraiser to help those most vulnerable.

Thousands of participants will be taking part in the walk in an anticipated 145 cities across Canada, including Richmond.

By walking together in the chill of the night, it’s hoped participants will better understand the experience of being on the streets during a cold Canadian winter, while raising funds to aid the work of CHIMO.

The Richmond walk begins and ends at Gilmore Park United Church, at 8060 No. 1 Road, where walkers will register, turn in the results of their fundraising efforts, and return at the end of the evening for a warm celebration meal and live musical entertainment.

Donning iconic CNOY toques, participants will walk a 2km, 5km or 10km route, and will warm up with toasty drinks at rest stops along the way.

This is CHIMO's fourth year taking part in the Coldest Night of the Year, and they’re aiming to raise $30,000 for their work with the homeless in Richmond.

An expected 150 walkers and 20 teams, including staff and friends of CHIMO, are expected to brave the cold winter's night next Saturday.

Community sponsors this year include Vancity Richmond, Touchstone Family Services, Richmond Family Place, Turning Point and the River Rock Casino Resort.
