Next Monday, Richmond will celebrate National Seniors Day in recognition of seniors and as the United Nations marks the International Day of Older Persons.

On Oct. 1, the city will run a local “positive aging campaign,” breakfast socials and a video screening.

“The City of Richmond is committed to being an age-friendly city,” said Mayor Malcolm Brodie in a press release.

“Through our Seniors Services Plan we deliver vital support to our rapidly growing 55+ year old population. It also encourages Richmond residents of all ages to recognize the important contributions of seniors within our community.

“In coming months, we will open the Minoru Centre for Active Living, which will include significantly expanded and enhanced services for seniors so we have much to celebrate this National Seniors Day.”

This year, the focus of the positive aging campaign is “positive aging through an intergenerational lens and highlights the important role of seniors in the lives of Richmond residents of every age.” Illustrating this, a photo campaign will be displayed at Minoru Place Activity Centre and Richmond community centres starting on Monday, Oct. 1.

On Oct. 1 at 2 p.m., the city will show Minoru Seniors Legacy Stories: Looking Back, Looking Forward. The locally-made film was the outcome of an artist-in-residency project by Catrina Megumi Longmuir who captured individual stories and documented the history of the Minoru Seniors Society.

Finally, two breakfast socials are scheduled for Monday morning. One will be held at West Richmond Community Centre from 9 to 10:30 a.m. while the other will be held at Cambie Community Centre from 10 to 11 a.m. Both breakfasts are free but require registration.
