McNair secondary Grade 12 student Cole Langer is one very focused teenager and knows exactly what he wants and how to achieve it.

Cole is one of 88 finalists vying for a Loran Award in Toronto next week, Feb. 1 and 2, valued at $100,000 over four years for undergraduate studies in Canada.

He was picked out of 5,089 candidates nationwide, based on character, commitment to service in the community and leadership potential.

After next week’s final – which includes a series of panel-led interviews - the Loran Scholars Foundation will grant 34 Loran Awards, which also includes tuition waivers from a partner university, mentorship, summer-internship funding, as well as annual retreats and forums.

Even if not selected as a Loran Scholar, Cole is eligible to receive a $5,000 finalist award.

“I’d like to go to McGill University to do youth psychology, where I can get involved in summer internships and give back to the community,” an eager Cole told the Richmond News, adding that he was “ecstatic” and jumped off his seat when he learned he was a finalist.

“(Winning) would make a huge impact, especially in terms of not having to work to pay for the education; which will give me more time to study and make an impact elsewhere, such as in the community.”

Aside from his studies, Cole is a very busy person, being student council president and is president of the school’s SEVA Club - which makes sure any student at the school who needs a breakfast can get one.

He’s also a local soccer referee for ages eight to 17, has been an assistant ref at the annual Nations Cup at Hugh Boyd and plays competitive soccer and ball hockey.
