Ferris elementary in Richmond, B.C. is being given $20,000 for new technology in honour of Earth Day.

It was one of 10 Canadian schools selected for the grants from Staples Canada for its commitment to helping the environment.

"Providing the future generation of leaders access to the tools necessary to grow their innovative environmental projects through the Superpower your School contest is another way we are living our commitment to our customers and communities,” said Staples Canada CEO David Boone.

The contest is held annually, and more than 500 schools applied for the grants this year. The prizes are meant to recognize environmentally conscious Canadian schools and encourage young people to protect the planet.

At Ferris, all students did a carbon footprint survey with their families. At the end of the school year, they’ll do it again to see how much they’ve been able to reduce their impact. Throughout the year, they’ve also done monthly energy challenges to motivate students and staff to reduce their energy consumption.

The school will hold an assembly on April 24 to formally receive the award.

The Richmond News has reached out to the school district for comment, but has not yet received a response.
