Richmond Chinese Community Society celebrates 30th birthday and Lunar New Year at Lansdowne Centre

Richmond Chinese Community Society (RCCS) will be hosting its annual Lunar New Year Celebration on Saturday, Feb. 9.

It’s also RCCS’ 30th anniversary of being founded and it’ll be holding its big New Year event at Lansdowne Centre, with a colourful opening ceremony scheduled for noon that day.

After the opening ceremony, there will be an array of performances to follow, right up to 5 p.m.

This year’s celebration kicks off at 11 a.m., with the money god handing out red packets and a variety of multicultural performances ranging from the lion dance, Chinese opera, Chinese cultural folk dance, Korean Taekwondo, Japanese Taiko, Irish/Polish folk dance and Filipino folk dance.

There will also be Japanese drumming, Chinese calligraphies, Korean ceramic making and western painting demonstrations.

Community organizations will also host exhibition booths at the event.

The Lunar New Year is a 15-day celebration starting on the first day of the first lunar month.

This year, is the Year of the Pig and lunar New Year’s Day falls on Feb. 5. The Lunar New Year is an important festival for many Asian cultures where people return home on the eve of the Lunar New Year to have dinner with their family.
