Schools are beginning to close for the holidays, which means more time with family over the coming weeks. While holiday festivities will certainly fill schedules to the brim, the city has a handy list of winter activities to help occupy any downtime.

While holiday festivities will certainly fill schedules to the brim, the city has a handy list of winter activities to help occupy any downtime. Here are a few festive activities, some of which are listed on the city’s website.

1. Winter Wonderland skating at Minoru Arenas

A holiday favourite in Richmond, the arena is decorated with real trees and other holiday displays, all of which are surrounded by thousands of sparkling lights. Regular admission rates apply and skate rentals are extra.

2. Jingle Bell Tea at London Heritage Farm

Sip tea and savour the taste of seasonal baked good in the London Heritage Farm’s cozy tea room with family and friends. This festive tea is available Dec. 22 from 12 to 5 p.m. For more information, visit www.londonheritagefarm.ca or call 604-271-5220.

3. Participate in the Richmond Public Library’s holiday reading challenge

Readers are invited to join in a holiday reading challenge, “The 14 Days of Reading,” beginning Dec. 21. Visit any public library branch for more details on the challenge or any other festive events.

4. Check out these festive spots and take some family photos

This holiday season, there are many places in Richmond decked out with bright lights and plenty of cheer. In fact, the City of Richmond says approximately 650,000 lights will be illuminated throughout December. Check out this list of local spots to snap a photo amongst these wintery displays.

5. Bundle up and enjoy the Steveston Santa Claus Parade

Join Santa, Mrs. Claus and many friends around the streets of Steveston on Christmas Eve. This is a free, family-friendly event. Non-perishable food donations are welcome and will be donated to the Richmond Food Bank.
