The Steveston Buddhist Temple is inviting Professor Kenichiro Mogi, a neural scientist from Japan and a visiting professor at the Tokyo Institute of Technology, to give a lecture here in Richmond.

“Prof. Mogi is a leading authority in the field of Neural Science in Japan,” said the temple.

“(He) will be talking on the Buddhist practice of ‘mindfulness,’ which has transcended the realm of religious practice and is now used widely as a therapy for mental health.”

Mogi, who has a degree in science and a degree in law and a Ph.D. in physics from the University of Tokyo, was called a “celebrity neuroscientist” by the Japan Times.

He has published more than 50 books, covering brain science as well as philosophy, history, art, education and linguistics, and was the first Japanese person to give a TED Talk.

An open dialogue will take place after his talk, in English and Japanese, on “Buddhism and the Mind,” between Mogi and guest speakers from the Buddhist Churches of America.

The talk takes place on April 21 from 2 to 4 p.m. For ticket information, call (604)277-2323 or email to [email protected].
