Daddy's business expands after winning 'Best Of'

Richmond’s Corvus Energy has been awarded a long-term contract to provide service and maintenance to Scandlines hybrid ferry fleet which serves routes in Denmark, Sweden and Germany.

Richmond’s Corvus Energy has been awarded a long-term contract to provide service and maintenance to Scandlines hybrid ferry fleet which serves routes in Denmark, Sweden and Germany. The  10-year contract is for the entire Scandlines hybrid ferry fleet. The comprehensive contract includes both traditional service and maintenance of the fleets’ energy storage systems, plus Corvus’ remote condition-based monitoring service called Watchman. On Feb. 5, Scandlines put its two, newest Corvus powered hybrid ferries, the M/V Berlin and M/V Copenhagen, into regular service on their Rostock-Gedser route between Denmark and Germany. Along with the decreased environmental impact, the fuel consumption of the vessels has been reduced to almost one third per crossing per car compared to the previous ferries used on the same route.

Richmond-based Premium Brands Holdings Corporation has acquired a new business and an entry into Eastern Canada. According to Food in Canada, a food and beverage processing magazine, the company has bought Interprovincial Meat Sales Ltd., which is based in Dartmouth, N.S. Interprovincial Meats is a meat trader and distributor of beef, poultry and pork, and serves all the Maritime provinces. Details of the transaction were not disclosed. Premium Brands owns a range of specialty food manufacturing and differentiated food distribution businesses with operations in B.C., Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario and Quebec. In the U.S., the company has operations in Nevada and Washington State.

The Beatle’s may have said it well when they sang, All You Need Is Love.

But Shapoor Hanifi and his family, who run Daddy’s Delight in east Richmond, have perfected the mantra by adding big helpings of passion to their recipe of serving up what Richmond News readers voted as Best Kebabs in last year’s Best Of edition.

“When you have a passion, when you love what you are doing, this no longer becomes a job,” said Shapoor, who works alongside his brother, Naser. “And that makes a huge difference.

“Sometimes, people choose their job because they have no choice and that is something they do to pass their day,” he added. “But for some others, they are in love with what they are doing and are more satisfied in making something that people enjoy.

“That’s the biggest reward we can get.”

The reward also comes from continuing what Shapoor and Naser’s father, Ali, started in their homeland of Iran. Ali’s goal was to create the best kebab restaurant he could. And he achieved that, running it for 60 years.

During that time, he instilled in his sons not only the right way to cook the best kebabs, but to treat the customers well.

“Our dad, he was very strict and disciplined, especially when it came to cooking,” Shapoor said. “For example, when we were little kids, he’d tell us the right way of flipping the kebabs on the grill. And that meant flipping them 20 times to make sure they cook slowly, properly and evenly, all the way through.”

Plus, all the kebabs are made by hand, from scratch, with no processed ingredients.

“It’s better when you make them by hand because a machine cannot produce a tender kebab like we have. They are not as juicy,” Shapoor said.

Consistency inside and outside the kitchen is another big factor.

“You have to take good care of all of your customers, all the time,” Shapoor said. “It’s no matter if it’s a regular or someone who has come in for the first time. Everyone is special. Customers recognize it when they are treated that way and they will come back.

“It’s no matter if you satisfy 100 customers and have one who you maybe not treat quite right. That’s not good. Just one negative experience is bad for business. Here, the customer always comes first.”

And many become friends.

“After a while, they become like your family,” Shapoor said. “They come in, sit down and talk about sports, especially soccer, politics, whatever. You develop that kind of relationship. You become a friend. And how can you not treat your friend right?

“I believe in that.”

Combining all of those factors handed down by their father meant there wasn’t much of a hesitation when it came to naming the restaurant.

“Daddy’s Delight – it pays homage to our dad. It’s that simple,” Shapoor said.

Business since last year’s Best Of win in the News has been so good that Daddy’s Delight is set to move into a vacant space next door to their Cambie and No 5 roads location, doubling their room to better serve their fans.

“To win in the Best Of, it was a huge boost for us,” Shapoor said. “The recognition was good. And our goal is to get bigger.”

The new location will allow the business to expand its catering business and add a couple more flat screen TVs to enhance the atmosphere inside the eatery.
