Cynthia Wei, a Grade 11 McMath student, is living the dream this summer, acting with Teen Shakespeare.

Cynthia Wei, the “little but fierce” Grade 11 McMath student, is one of  18 actors cast to perform in the Carousel Theatre for Young People’s Teen Shakespeare Program’s production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream.

The teen is no stranger to the theatre; having been in numerous productions including The Time Machine at the Gateway Theatre, Twelfth Night with the Young Shakespeareans at Bard on the Beach and school plays at McMath secondary.

Playing Hermia, daughter of Egeus, Cynthia says being part of the production is “not only fun but also teaches a lot of valuable knowledge about Shakespeare...”

“I really enjoy theatre,” said Cynthia.

“It’s one of my passions and I hope to one day pursue a career in it.”

The program is an intensive, six-week course, where young actors come together to train and put on an outdoor production on Granville Island.

Despite the long commute from her home in Richmond, Cynthia says the program is “hard work but doesn’t feel like work,” and that she’s “excited to get out of bed every morning.”

“Cynthia had a spark that attracted me to having her in the production,” said Mike Stack, head instructor of the program. “I like her attitude, and she has a wonderful work ethic.”

The Shakespearean classic goes July 27 to Aug. 11 at the performance works outdoor stage at Granville Island.

Admission is free but premium seating is $6 from Tickets.CarouselTheatre.ca.
