Gateway Theatre announced Monday that Barbara Tomasic has been hired as the interim producer and will oversee the roll-out of Gateway’s artistic programming, when artistic director Jovanni Sy leaves in mid-February.

Sy announced in April that he will step down on Feb. 16, 2019 after seven years serving as the artistic director for the theatre.

"Barbara Tomasic is an accomplished theatre performer, director and teacher who has a long history with Gateway in a number of professional capacities," said Gateway in a press release.

Tomasic was the artistic associate at Gateway from 2004-2007 and she was the co-artistic director at U.S. based Musical Theatreworks.

Her last directing project at Gateway was The Music Man in 2016, and most recently, she directed the show Grease, which became the all-time best selling production at the Chemainus Theatre last summer.

Gateway said it is currently undergoing an "adaptive planning process" with a New York consultancy and expects to begin a search for permanent new artistic leadership by early 2019.

Tomasic will start her position in February, 2019.
