Update: 'Richmond World Festival' defeats 'HotPot World Festival' as name for Labour Day event

After hiring a private consultant to consult with community members, the City of Richmond is hoping the third time is the charm to finally set a name for a planned outdoor festival during the Labour Day weekend.

Last month Richmond councillors kiboshed the name Lulubaloo, so Bryan Tasaka, manager of major events, took to a consultation process to find new potential names.

According to Tasaka's report to council this week, those names are: HotPot World Festival, Pearl in the Park and Richmond World Festival.

The latter is similar to the initial generic naming of the party as the Richmond World Block Party, and has been tentatively aproved by a majority of councillors. The former two are said to be Asian-inspired.

"The survey (consultation) results favoured Richmond World Festival. The strength of this name is in its simplicity. It gives prominent recognition to Richmond as the host and speaks to the multicultural nature of the event," noted Tasaka.

The party is said to be a multicultural event, with a World Food Truck zone and performance stages as key elements of the Saturday afternoon and evening festival.

Groups such as Tourism Richmond, the Richmond Intercultural Advisory Committee, S.U.C.C.E.S.S, Aberdeen Centre, Richmond Mandarin Lions Club, the Richmond Centre for Disability, the Richmond Chamber of Commerce and the Richmond School District were consulted.

With under five months to go, few other details are known about the event that the city intends as an alternative to the Pacific National Exhibition.
