Richmond’s first baby of 2013 arrived just a few hours into the New Year.

Weighing in at a very healthy nine pounds and 15 ounces, Oliver Wing was born at exactly 3:47 a.m. in Richmond Hospital.

Mom Natalie, originally from New Zealand, was taken into hospital around 1:30 p.m. on New Year’s Eve by husband Ryan, a Richmond native.

But it wasn’t until around midnight that little Oliver started to make his push for the outside world.

“She went into labour around midnight I think it was,” said a tired but happy Ryan, a Steveston High grad and former Palmer secondary student.

“He was a big boy. He arrived via C-section, which was a last-minute decision.”

Ryan said he “had a feeling” that Oliver might have been the first baby to be born in the city, but wasn’t sure as there was another couple in there at the same time.

“They showed up late and on and I knew they were ‘ready to go,’” he added.

“It’s pretty cool I guess (to be the first).”

Mom told the News she’s “feeling good” and was very happy when her “big boy” finally arrived.

“He’s adjusted really well and we’re going home this afternoon (Wednesday),” said Natalie.

The couple, who met in Australia and moved back to Canada in 2004, already have a daughter in three-year-old Maddison, who’s thrilled to have a baby brother.

“She’s been up since 6 a.m., apparently desperate to come in and see her little brother,” added Natalie.

Ryan explained that, although they live in North Delta, their midwife works at Richmond Hospital and that’s where Maddison was born.
