The Seafair Atom A1 Islanders made the most of their trip to Scottsdale, Arizona last weekend — winning four of five games to finish second at the Junior Coyotes Tier 1 Elite League MLK AAA Tournament.

The Islanders received a steady dose of teams coached by former NHL players and managed 19 goals over the course of the tournament, while surrendering just 10.

The first game was a very aggressive affair against the San Jose Junior Sharks which the Islanders won 6-3, led by a hat trick from Ryan Lin. The Sharks’ roster featured kids of NHL alumni Owen Nolan, Evgeni Nabokov, and Curtis Brown.

In their second game, the Islanders would lose to the eventual champions  — the LA Jr Kings 5-2 —  against an extremely well coached team by former longtime Shark and Detroit Red Wing Brad Stuart.

The third game was a close 1-0 win over the host Junior Coyotes backstopped by a shut out by Sahil Aulakh and a very strong defensive performance by Maddy Fry, Caleb Jang, Josh Mantle, Jacob Broderick, Ryan Kump and captain Evan Markel.

Seafair won the fourth game over HC Dallas 6-0 paced by a hat trick from Kade Lee and the shutout goaltending of Zyann Zapanta.

In the last game Seafair out scored the Detroit Compuware team coached by ex NHLer Brian Savage 4-2, led by Evan Jeske’s two-goal performance.

Seafair received goal support and offence over the tournament from Miles McCracken, Max Shin, Steven Yan, Josh Deamer, Aiden Wang and Nicolas Kovich.

Thank you to a great parent group and an awesome set of coaches for a great weekend!

The Atom A1 Seafair Islanders are coached by Shawn McQuistin, Jenny Wilson, Trevor Shackles, and Weily Lin.
