Richmond’s new minor hockey association will make its inaugural flight next season.

After plenty of consideration and suggestions, the executive has announced the merged Richmond Minor and Seafair operation will be known as the Richmond Jets Minor Hockey Association

With Ravens, Roadrunners, Raiders, Islanders and Chuckers being some of the parent names currently used by other youth sports organizations in the city, it’s the first time in recent memory Richmond’s proximity to YVR is reflected — including all 10 public secondary schools.

“We are excited that this name accurately reflects our location, while also providing a new team name for which our minor hockey association is uniquely qualified,” wrote the executive in an announcement to Richmond Minor and Seafair membership.

The next step will be coming up with a new logo and colour scheme. A contest is now underway to design a new logo.

“We do intend to recognize the history of both Seafair and Richmond Minor in our new jerseys.  However the new association also needs its own identity,” the executive added. “Effective immediately we are announcing a contest for a new logo. Any member of our hockey family is welcome to create a logo in their proposed color scheme and submit it by May 15. We look forward to seeing the creativity of our large hockey family.”

Meanwhile the association also announced a special gathering on Friday, April 27 at the Richmond Ice Centre to support the tragic Humboldt Broncos junior hockey team bus accident that took 16 lives and injured 13 more on April 6.

The night’s schedule begins with a family skate for Hockey 1 to Atom players. Following an ice clean, there will be moment of silence then Pee Wee to Juvenile age players, along with coaches, will be taking to the ice.

The night will be raising funds for the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL) Assistance Program which is providing mental health assistance, counselling and grieving for all players of the SJHL.
