Richmond native Jordan Gilles has been recognized for his standout season on and off the floor with the Colorado Mammoth.
The rookie defender is the 2016 winner of the Mammoth Fan Choice Award, the National Lacrosse League club announced last week.
Gilles was selected in the sixth and final round of the 2015 NLL Draft and was the only player to make a team and play in a game. He went on to score eight goals which tied him for top spot in the league among defensive players. It was also an output that matched all players selected in rounds three through six of the NLL Draft.
The 21-year-old McMath graduate came through the Richmond Minor Lacrosse system and helped the Coquitlam Adanacs win back-to-back B.C. Junior “A” Lacrosse championships.
After being selected in the draft, Gilles beat the odds with a terrific training camp to crack the Mammoth’s roster.
“Jordan has been a true diamond in the rough,” said Mammoth president and general manager Steve Govett. “I’m so happy that he’s enjoyed the success he has, and that the fans have acknowledged him for what he does on and off the field.”
Livng in Denver full-time during the season, Gilles was one of the most active players in the community, and regularly made appearances at hospitals, charitable events and schools.
“Playing in front of that many fans, it’s exhilarating,” said Gilles. “Getting to meet fans after games and at events, you really appreciate them. To see how passionate they are makes you want to play better.”
Gilles was also selected sixth overall by Nanaimo in the 2016 Western Lacrosse Association draft.
