The first annual Richmond Midget Lacrosse Tournament was a hit on and off the floor for the host association.
The event, held over the Victoria Day Weekend, featured teams from across the province and 60 volunteers stepped forward to ensure it would be a success. The Richmond Lacrosse Association's A1 Midget team did its part to add to excitement by capturing its division.
The Roadrunners' title run began with a 6-5 come-from-behind victory over Port Coquitlam. Alexandre Morghese earned game MVP honours.
Richmond knew it faced a tough test in its next contest against Kamloops and rose to the challenge with a solid opening period that resulted in a 3-0 lead. The hosts eventually built up a 5-0 advantage en route to a 6-3 victory. Shawn Hanley was named game MVP.
The Roadrunners needed to be careful not to look past the Delta Islanders on Sunday morning, having recently defeated its cross-river rival 11-2 in league play. Sure enough, the Islanders put up a tough fight in a 9-6 Richmond win. Goaltender Will Schwan earned the game MVP award.
The Roadrunners hooked up with Kamloops again in the semi-finals and there would be no fast start this time. The teams were tied at 2-2 after one period and remained deadlocked heading into the final frame. The locals opened up a 4-2 lead before Kamloops pulled within one with seven minutes still remaining.
Things got even more interesting when the Runners were accessed a penalty for too many men. They came through with a huge kill then caught a break when Kamloops got nailed for the same penalty. Richmond would hang on for a 4-3 win with Bradley Hofmann collecting game MVP honours.
The stage was set for another rematch in the final, this time against PoCo. The Roadrunners put together a complete game and dominated the Saints from start to finish in a 10-2 win. Jordan Gilles was named the game MVP.
Also playing a big part in the successful tournament run were:Taylor Vincent, Wyatt Pinder, Cody Nass, Jack Tubajon, Jaren Sangara, Evan Hunt, Jonah Sahota, Bryan Mancinin, Jonathan Bailey, Robbie Ogloff, Finn Konkin and Austin McAra.
