U12 Roadrunners win silver at provincial championships

The U12 Richmond Roadrunners captured silver at last weekend's Provincial Tier II Field Lacrosse Championships in Victoria.

The boys were led to the runner-up finish by their strongest team effort at the right time of the season.

From gunners Sam Evanson, Kieran McKay and Chase Pretti-Pearsall; to the all around play of the likes of William Dewerson and Cooper Yates; to the goaltending of Luke Steenge, it was a total team effort. Timely goals by Jack Nett and the first-ever field goal for big stick Marc Sahota also were significant factors.

Long forgotten was their squeaking into Provincials as the kids showed what their coaches knew they were capable of -- losing out to nemesis Delta in the final after almost coming out on top (a 7-6 loss) during round-robin play against the Footmen. Along the way the 'Runners handled Coquitlam (11-3) and Pacific Rim of Victoria (9-1), before doubling Kamloops 4-2 in the semi-final.

The U14's meanwhile found themselves struggling with the details on the opening day, and before it was over, they were 0-2 and their hopes of a provincial medal were over.

They did salvage some pride on day two with a victory in their final game against the Adanacs -- a team they hadn't beaten in two previous league meetings.
