The UFV women's basketball squad had a rough weekend in Alberta, losing to the University of Calgary Dinos 79-69 Friday night, then coming up short against the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns, 64-59 on Saturday.
The Cascades' record now stands at 11-3 in the Pacific Division of Canada West, a half game better than Thompson Rivers University at 11-4 for first place.
UFV is now ranked fourth in the CIS Top 10 poll, after being previously ranked No. 1 in the CIS for two straight weeks.
On Saturday, Aieisha Luyken led UFV in scoring with 19 points, followed by Sarah Wierks with 16.
On Friday night Kayli Sartori had a 19-point performance against the Dinos, with Wierks adding 16.
"We didn't match Calgary's energy or determination tonight," said coach Al Tuchscherer of the Friday night contest.
"Give them full credit for taking that game away from us. We have a lot to learn about teams coming after us and rising to the occasion. I think we were all disappointed by our performance tonight."
The Cascades will now regroup and look forward to this weekend when they host the UNBC Timberwolves for two.
Saturday is the Cascades 'Shoot for the Cure Night' with special guest speaker Dale Larsen from the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation addressing the crowd at halftime.
Game times are 6 p.m. Friday and 5 p.m. Saturday at the Envision Athletic Centre.
In men's action
The Cascades are currently ranked seventh in the CIS Top 10 poll, sporting a 7-7 record, good for third place in the Pacific Division of Canada West.
UFV lost two close games on the weekend, 88-84 to the Calgary Dinos and 74-72 to the Lethbridge Pronghorns.
The Cascades will host UNBC at 8 p.m. Friday and 7 p.m. on Saturday.
? The Cascades women will run their inaugural 'Shoot for the Cure' fundraiser tonight, Jan. 24 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Finnegan's Pub, 33780 King Rd., Abbotsford. The goal is to raise funds for the CBCF by selling tickets, which include a meal for $15. There will also be prizes, a silent auction and much more with all proceeds going to the CBCF Yukon/BC Chapter.
