Sharks repeat as B.C. table tennis champions

Senior boys squad makes it back-to-back provincial titles

The Steveston-London senior boys' table tennis team achieved something few sports teams are ever able to do when they repeated as provincial champions this past weekend.

The Sharks went into championships as a high seed, but not the favoured team; however, as they did last year, the boys stepped up and played their best when it mattered.

Playing by Olympic rules, each match was a best-of-five  format, featuring three singles and two doubles games.

Steveston-London opened the 18-team draw by defeating Vernon's Kalamalka Secondary and then followed with a quarter-final victory over Charles Tupper.

In the semi-finals, the Sharks took on St. Georges and posted a close 3-2 win against one of the top private schools in B.C.

Steveston-London squared off against Churchill for the championship. The Bulldogs had upset the favoured hosts from Burnaby North in their semi-final game.

In a dominating match, the Sharks won 3-0 to make it back-to-back B.C. titles.

Team members include Henry Kan, Jonathan Li and David Lin. The Sharks are coached by Justin Luk and teacher Katrina Lau.

Steveston-London’s Sharks senior boys' B team came ninth, while the senior girls' team placed sixth. Team member Amy Zhang won the coveted tournament Fair Play award.
