Dear Editor,

Re: “Democracy vs. ethnicity in Richmond’s political arena,”Letters, June 14.

I would like to tell (letter writer) Ray Arnold I am a Chinese-Canadian, as are many of my friends in Richmond. We don’t agree with Ms. Guo and are saddened by her announcement, which divides Chinese-Canadians from other Canadians in Richmond.

Don’t worry, Mr. Arnold, a lot of Chinese-Canadians don’t agree with her. It is our choice to immigrate to Canada, to be a Canadian. So we need to be involved in this community, be a part of it.

As a politician, Guo proposes to bring the voice of Chinese-Canadians to Richmond city hall and asks her supporters to get involved in the community, offer their time and work to help others.

To quote an old Chinese saying, “We need to earn respect, not ask for respect.“

We are a multi-cultural country. We are happy that we can learn and enjoy each other’s culture.

We have to understand that, except for the First Nations, we have all come from overseas; the difference is just when and from where.

I wish she would agree and remember that we are all Canadians.

K. Lo
