Letter: Making noise about the noise in Steveston

Dea Editor, I would like to propose a change to the city’s Noise Bylaw 8856. Currently in the bylaw, Part 3, Noise Disturbing Neighbourhood, Sec.3.1.

Dea Editor,

I would like to propose a change to the city’s Noise Bylaw 8856.

Currently in the bylaw, Part 3, Noise Disturbing Neighbourhood, Sec.3.1.1 states:

“A Person:

(b) who is the owner or occupier of, or is in possession or control of, real property must not make, suffer, or permit any other person to make, a sound, on that real property, which can be easily heard by a person not on the same premises and which disturbs or tends to disturb the quiet, peace, rest, enjoyment, comfort or convenience of persons in the neighbourhood or vicinity.”

To allow our neighbourhood pubs to continue providing their “Sunday Night Jam sessions,” (which clearly violates sec.31.1(b) and disturbs the neigh-bourhood, but goes on week after week and staff seem unable or unwilling to stop it), I propose the bylaw include a clause for neighbourhood pubs, restaurants and cafes that gives them an exemption to sec.31.1(b).

Then for those of us who need to work or go to school Monday morning and have to suffer through these sessions, we can do so with only the frustration of the loud disturbing music, and be alleviated of the dual frustration that this noise violates Bylaw 8856 and nothing is being done about it.
