Letter: Fly your Canadian flag in Richmond, for free

Dear Editor,

Re: “Where are our Canadian flags?” Letters, July 5.

I can’t agree more with the sentiments expressed in Richard Cham’s letter.

I fly a 27” X 54” Canadian flag from the front of my home every day of the year, except such days as St. George’s Day, St. Patrick’s Day, St. David’s Day, etc., when I fly the flag of the day-appropriate country.

It is interesting to note, when visiting other countries, just how many of their citizens fly national flags, especially in the U.S.A. where patriotism is often confused with nationalism.  I digress.

The reason for my letter is to let the general public know that they are able to acquire, free of charge, a full-size (27” X 54”) Canadian Flag from their local M.P.’s office, the addresses of which can be obtained by Googling “My M.P.”

If a homeowner does not wish to go to the expense or can’t, for whatever reason, install a full-size flag pole, most hardware stores sell a kit of a 6’ flagpole and bracket to attach to the front of a house, balcony railing or fence.

It is also interesting to note that federal law forbids any strata corporation, co-op or other body or institution the authority to ban the flying of a Canadian flag.  I do suggest, however, that said bodies or organizations be advised or consulted, in advance of the erection of a pole and flying of a flag, if only out of courtesy.  There may be other considerations if, for instance, a flying flag impeded the visibility of exit or other emergency signage.

Hoping you had an enjoyable Canad Day.
