This section of Westminster Highway at Nelson Road is being widened, at a cost of $11.5 million, to facilitate a better flow of traffic to and from the port on the Fraser River.

Parts of Westminster Highway at Nelson Road are being widened at a cost of $11.5 million, paid for by the federal government, the City of Richmond, Port Metro Vancouver and TransLink.

The Minister of Transport, Lisa Raitt, was at the site to announce the project, along with Delta-Richmond East MP Kerry-Lynne Findlay and Mayor Malcolm Brodie.

The project involves the widening of Nelson Road and Westminster Highway from two to four lanes, over a total distance of 2.6 kilometres, along with upgrading the associated traffic signals.

According to the government, the project will increase road capacities to the Fraser River Port Richmond properties site, which happens to be situated adjacent to the 230-acre port-owned Gilmore Farms.

The widening is expected to be completed in November.

As part of an overall improvement package for the area, No. 6 Road was widened last year at a cost of $1.7 million.

Separate bike lanes are part of both projects.
