Richmond RCMP confirmed Thursday the arrest of a man suspected of what police have called a “despicable act.”

The suspect, a 36-year-old Calgary resident, is also alleged to have committed a violent crime spree in Vancouver on Wednesday, according to police.

In broad daylight on Tuesday, a man described as an Indo-Canadian in his late 20s or early 30s entered the home of a 78-year-old woman, who was home at the time, and allegedly pulled a gun on her, demanding her purse and car keys.

“This despicable act was particularly brazen, especially given the time in which it took place,” said Richmond RCMP Cpl. Dennis Hwang.

The woman, who lives in the 8000 block of Williams Road, told police the man had pulled out a gun after entering through an unlocked garage door. He is said to be about six-feet tall with a slim build and short, dark receding hair.

The suspect is thought to have ditched the victim’s vehicle near a business complex in the 4200 block of Hazelbridge Way, just before 2 a.m. on Wednesday morning.

On Wednesday, according to CBC News, Vancouver police announced they had arrested a 36-year-old man after he committed a string of violent incidents, starting with the theft of a grey Acura in Richmond around 8 a.m. The man then attempted to steal another woman’s purse at gunpoint before finally being aprehended with the help of a police helicopter.

On Thursday morning, Hwang said police were trying to link the suspect’s actions in both cities.

“Our investigators are working with colleagues from the Vancouver Police Department and other police agencies to ascertain his alleged involvement in crimes committed in multiple jurisdictions.”

Meanwhile, the woman is now receiving help from the Victim Services Unit, said Hwang.

The Lower Mainland District Forensic Unit processed the house and will do the same to the vehicle, said Hwang.

“If anyone has any information on this case, please contact us immediately,” said Hwang. “Your tips could make the difference in this case.”
