The flood risk has prompted Delta to activate its emergency operations centre.

Engineering director Hugh Fraser said the move is occurring today as the Fraser River water level at the Mission Gauge is reaching the six metre level.

The activation of the emergency operations centre at municipal hall is the second phase of the city’s flood preparedness plan, but it doesn’t mean there’s an imminent flooding threat in Delta.

The centre helps the city address any escalation of flood risk more quickly. Staff will also be in constant touch with the provincial emergency operations centre.

Staff are continuously monitoring the weather and river conditions, and crews are inspecting dikes on a regular basis.

The river’s water velocity and debris pose the biggest threats to the dikes.

Further up river a number of evacuation alerts and orders have been issued as the water continues to rise on the river.
