The ten winners from the City of Richmond's 2016 street banner contest. Eight of the near 300 entries were chosen by a panel of community judges - including the Richmond News - while two were selected as part of a Facebook campaign.

Every fall, the City of Richmond hosts a street banner contest that encourages community members to submit creative and visually appealing designs that represent Richmond.

This year, the contest received more than 3,200 likes on Facebook as part of the community voting process and 10 winning banners were selected to beautify the city’s streetscapes.

“As a popular component to the City’s Partners for Beautification initiative, the street banner contest provides residents a grassroots opportunity to become more involved in the beautification of their city,” said Mayor Malcolm Brodie.

“With almost 300 entries to choose from this year, the banner designs chosen really reflect Richmond’s uniqueness and diversity.”

Contest participants submitted designs using a range of visual art forms such as photography, digital art, painting, mixed media collage, illustration and printmaking. The submissions were all original images reflecting one or more of the following themes: active living, arts, culture and heritage, city centre, parks and nature, community, and transportation.

One of the creative designs unveiled on Tuesday evening celebrates the joy of community spirit through bright bursts of colour sketched in the night sky.

“Fireworks are a fantastic public art form, visible to all,” said contest winner Brenda Clark.

“They can be mysterious, with ephemeral, unpredictable beauty – sometimes marvellous and unexpected for Richmond residents to enjoy.”

More than 1,000 street banners are produced for the city. Richmond’s street banner program is unique as designs are submitted by community members, and winning designs are selected through both an online community voting campaign and a panel of volunteer jurors.

A complete set of the new street banners are currently on display at Richmond City Hall. During the month of April, banners will be installed on select streets in the City Centre area and main gateways into the City.

The new designs will decorate the streets until March 2017. To view the winning designs and for more information on the street banner program, please visit richmond.ca/banners.

Last year’s banners will be available in their original banner form and also as recycled banner bags beginning in May.

They can be purchased from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday to Friday, from the Community Services Division reception located at the City of Richmond’s Operations Yard, 5599 Lynas Lane.
