Watch out for Mounties slapping the cuffs on innocent bystanders this evening.

However, before people start screaming “police brutality,” don’t worry, the cuffs being handed out are reflective bracelets.

The bracelets are being handed out by officers on Wednesday night in an attempt to increase pedestrian safety after two recent serious accidents.

“Every year in Richmond, an average of 45 pedestrians are injured in crashes from October to December when crashes involving pedestrians increase across the province,” said Joanne Bergman, ICBC road safety coordinator.

“Since our days are wetter and darker at this time of year, it’s important for drivers and pedestrians to focus their full attention on the road and make eye contact with each other whenever possible.

“As a pedestrian, wear reflective clothing or use reflective gear so that drivers can see you in all weather conditions.”

Drivers should always be on the lookout for pedestrians, added Bergman, especially “when visibility is poor, at intersections and transit stops.”

Police and volunteers will be handing out reflectors and information cards to pedestrians in the Minoru and Granville area and also near No. 3 and Saba roads.

The campaign will take place between 5 and 7 p.m.

“It is our hope that by talking with the public and getting the message out about slowing down and wearing something bright we can prevent crashes from happening,” said Richmond RCMP’s Cpl. Stephanie Ashton.
