Richmond has a new top cop and he has several ties to the city, going back to his early days as a Mountie.

Supt. Will Ng — who will take over from the outgoing superintendent Rennie Nesset in mid-April — started his policing career in 1995 in Surrey, where he worked multiple roles, including four years in general duty.

In 2004, he joined the RCMP undercover unit, eventually transferring to the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) in 2009 where he became an accredited team commander.

His last assignment was as Acting Deputy Operations Officer at the Combined Forces Special Enforcement Unit (CFSEU-BC), where he was also a member of the Operations Advisory Committee.

Ng attended the Richmond campus of what is now Kwantlen Polytechnic University and his wife was brought up in Richmond, where her family still resides.

Professionally, Ng has been involved in a number of high-profile Richmond cases, including the investigation into the on-duty hit and run death of Const. Jimmy Ng and the murder of Chinese visitor Lianjie Guo in 2012.

“The sense of community in Richmond is second to none and I am very honoured to have the opportunity to contribute to the safety, security and appeal of this wonderful community,” said Ng in a press release.

“I am also humbled to lead the fine men and women of the Richmond RCMP detachment who exemplify excellence in policing on a daily basis.”

Raised in an immigrant family, Ng understands the challenges and rewards of breaking through cultural barriers.

He speaks fluent Cantonese and is committed to improving his fluency in Mandarin.

“(Ng’s) impressive service record and knowledge of our community will be great assets as he helps lead the effort to sustain and build upon public safety in Richmond,” said Mayor Malcolm Brodie.

“Community safety is a major priority for Richmond City Council, which has approved the hiring of 22 additional police officers over the past two years. We look forward to working with Supt. Ng and his team in addressing our community’s key policing priorities.”
